Este ano, serão 30 garis que farão o trabalho na orla de Copacabana, a partir da meia-noite de sexta-feira para sábado, com apoio de dois tratores para remoção de resíduos. Um deles com implemento traseiro para peneiramento da areia e um caminhão compactador, garantindo que tudo esteja limpo para a grande festa da virada de ano, na noite do dia 31. As outras praias que recebem oferendas também contarão com remoção do material pelos garis da Comlurb a partir do fim da noite desta sexta-feira.
O ritual de oferendas a Iemanjá já é tradição no Réveillon carioca. Todos os anos, no dia 29/12, os religiosos fazem homenagens à Rainha das Águas nas praias, em agradecimento ao ano que está terminando. Normalmente, são colocadas flores e velas, entre outros itens, em pequenas embarcações lançadas ao mar. Outras pessoas preferem simplesmente jogar flores no mar, em reverência à orixá. Respeitado o direito à fé, logo após o fim das homenagens as equipes da Comlurb fazem a remoção de todo o material deixado à beira-mar ou devolvido pelas águas.
