Ele é composto por 1.100 hectares de área protegida da Mata Atlântica que rodeiam inúmeras cachoeiras e poços. A unidade também guarda flora e fauna da região, bem como, um patrimônio científico que expõe as estruturas subterrâneas abaixo de vulcão tal como condutos subvulcânicos.
Há dois acessos ao parque. Um deles, o chamado Acesso Sul, pode ser feito por dois caminhos. Por Nova Iguaçu, pelo bairro Caonze, passando pelas ruas Benjamim Chambarelli, Capitão Edmundo Soares e Juvenal Valadares até chegar à Estrada da Cachoeira, onde fica a portaria. Ou então por Mesquita, no bairro Coreia. Ao final da Avenida Brasil, basta cruzar uma pequena ponte que levará à Estrada da Cachoeira.
É no lado sul que estão localizadas diversos poços d’água e cachoeiras liberadas para o banho, entre elas a Véu da Noiva, onde também é possível a prática do rapel. Para chegar até estes pontos o visitante percorre trilhas sinalizadas que contam parte da história de Nova Iguaçu, como a sede da Fazenda Dona Eugênia, construída no século XIX, e as ruínas do clube Dom Felipe, que funcionou até meados da década de 1960.
Já no Acesso Norte, no Bairro da Luz, também é possível fazer atividades mais radicais, como o voo livre de asa-delta e parapente, partindo da rampa existente da Serra do Vulcão, rapel negativo na Pedra da Contenda e passeio de mountain bike.
